Lafayette Young Lawyers Association Events
LYLA hosts and takes part in numerous events throughout the year. Please see below for events that recur annually although they may not yet be on the calendar:
January – Court Opening and Red Mass – Following longstanding traditions, at the beginning of each year, members of the judiciary and the legal community gather to welcome Lafayette’s newly admitted members of the bar and to eulogize those who have passed on in a Red Mass celebrated at St. John’s Cathedral. The mass is followed by a formal ceremony at the courthouse and a reception.
April – Birdie with the Bar Golf Tournament – Each Spring, LYLA’s Fundraising Committee puts together a golf tournament open to the public and the members of the bar in order to raise money to help fund the community outreach work championed by the Lafayette Parish Bar Foundation.
May – In May, our country celebrates Law Day. Here in Lafayette, we make it a week-long event where our young lawyers section interacts with local high school students to teach them about the law and the possibilities for working in the legal profession. The week culminates in a mock trial at the Federal Courthouse where a sitting judge presides over the trial.
August – Lafayette Young Lawyers Association Installation Banquet – This event is always a fun time for all members of the bar and the judiciary to get together over drinks and hors d’ouvres to install LYLA’s officers and Board of Directors.
